Yesterday night a friend told me that her friend that I met twice thought I was cute. And it made me bubble up. I’m not going to pursue anything but it’s just that sometimes self confidence isn’t enough and it’s nice to feel attractive.
why does this website continue to make me feel like a shitty human being for being white
Whoa whoa whoa, that isn’t the intention of the people here who understand about the privilege afforded to white people. It doesn’t make YOU a bad person for being white. What’s wrong is the amount of time that white people have had all of this unchecked authority. You feel antagonized on a website like tumblr? Try feeling antagonized for not being white. Try going to schools where it is assumed that you’ll do poorly, going to interviews and being told you might not have the qualifications to work at such a place. In my line of work, I have actually seen people not get hired because of their ethnicity and even more so if they come from a less than desirable part of town. You might be a great person, but realize that people are still being hindered by their ethnicity, and while we’re only barely starting to get a voice, white people already think they’re losing theirs. Merely because they’re so used to theirs being the only one.
Let’s talk about how Bey is now the female artist with the most Grammy nominations of all time after being nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration tonight. Yet another record in 2013….without a new album.
Receptionist:Don't you feel like your generation is just lazy?
Me:Lazy? I'd say apathetic.
Receptionist:Isn't it the same?
Me:No. My generation is criticized and toiled with, and I don't see why not - just turn on the TV and watch what they're feeding us. But my generation is not lazy. My generation fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. My generation fought for womens rights in a fury that hadn't been seen since the 19th Amendment. My generation got our first black President elected. My generation fought for Gay rights for the first time in American history. And with all that, we are apathetic, and that's because things aren't going to be better for us down the road. We are the first generation expected to make less than our parents. We are the first generation to see America lose its status as a super power. We've lived through the worst economic times since the Great Depression, and are forced to take out thousands of dollars in student loans at the same time, all while our college degrees slowly turn into a highschool diploma. We've done plenty, and expect nothing. So no, I wouldn't say we're lazy, just apathetic.
